Literary Contributions of the Monthly "Adab-e-Lateef "in the Context of the Progressive Writers’ Movement

Abstract

Nearly ninety years have passed since the establishment of the Progressive Writers’ Association. This ninety-year journey of progressive writers and intellectuals is significant and worthy of critical consideration in many respects. Although numerous books defining and analyzing Progressive Literature hold great importance, literary journals that preserve history moment by moment are even more valuable. When the Progressive Writers’ Association was formally inaugurated in Lucknow in 1936, the Lahore-based monthly journal Adab-e-Lateef was already in circulation. However, it took some time for the magazine to become associated with the activities of the Association. Once it aligned itself with Progressive Literature, it effectively became an official spokesperson for the movement. "Adab-e-Lateef"along with the literary journals that followed it, played a crucial role in the promotion of Progressive Literature. The magazine had actually begun publication in 1935, a year before the formation of the Progressive Writers’ Association, and from 1936 onward, most of the works published in it began to reflect progressive tendencies. As Progressive Literature increasingly focused on representing the lives and struggles of ordinary people, the poetry of writers associated with the movement found a place in Adab-e-Lateef. Among the prominent poets linked with the Progressive Movement were Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Makhdoom Mohiuddin, Ali Sardar Jafri, Asrar-ul-Haq Majaz, Moin Hasan Jazbi, Sahir Ludhianvi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi, and Majrooh Sultanpuri. Through their poetry, these writers supported the ideals of the movement by advocating humanism, resistance to imperialism, the rights of workers, peasants, and the laboring classes, opposition to social inequality, and the struggle for national freedom. They sought to inspire social change and revolution through their literary expression. The Progressive Writers’ Movement emerged as one of the most influential literary movements in Urdu literature, and the works of these poets continued to be published in Adab-e-Lateef. Therefore, it is impossible to deny the significant contribution of the monthly Adab-e-Lateef to the dissemination and promotion of Progressive Literature.
